LATEST IN AI
🚨 Our Report — Last week, Apple announced that it was delaying the release of some of its Apple Intelligence AI features to Siri—which were expected to make the voice assistant smarter and more personal with the integration of ChatGPT—until 2026 or maybe even 2027 (originally, they promised they’d arrive this April, along with the release of iOS 18.4) because the updates were “taking longer than expected” (it’s rumored that the AI-powered Siri works just 80% of the time), which has reportedly—according to a leaked recording of an internal all-hands Siri meeting—angered staff and sparked a huge backlash among Apple fans.
🔓 Key Points:
Siri Division Director Robby Walker called the delay an “ugly situation” and acknowledged that team members must be “angry and embarrassed” as people ask them what happened, which “will not feel good.”
He praised the team for its “incredibly impressive” work but said the features weren’t “ready for the general public,” and said although the target is for a 1OS 19 release this year, it “doesn’t mean that we’re shipping then.”
Apple fans have blasted Apple for “over-promising,” accusing it of “false advertising”, with many fearing that “mediocrity and excuses” could see it fall behind its rivals who have already embedded AI into their devices.
🔐 Relevance — The all-hands meeting also revealed tensions between the Siri unit and Apple’s advertising team, as they started advertising Apple Intelligence and the flashy, new Siri features last year—promising fans they’d be arriving this year—when they were nowhere near ready, which put significant pressure on the Siri team, but since the delay was announced, all advertising around the AI-powered Siri has been removed.

🚨 Our Report — After Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek exploded onto the AI scene with R1—its cost-efficient and powerful reasoning model—earlier this year, the Chinese government has imposed a strict travel ban to prevent the potential leaking of sensitive or confidential information.
🔓 Key Points:
Hedge Fund company, High-Flyer (DeepSeek’s parent company, which is also owned by DeepSeek founder, Liang Wenfeng) is enforcing the travel restriction by confiscating key employees' passports.
Alongside the travel ban, stopping DeepSeek employees from leaving China, the Chinese government is also screening potential investors before they’re allowed to attend DeepSeek company meetings.
This comes weeks after the Chinese government reportedly ordered AI researchers and entrepreneurs to stop traveling to the US over concerns about the leaking of trade or state secrets.
🔐 Relevance — As DeepSeek ramps up the development of its two latest models, R2 and V4 (rumored for release in May), the Chinese government is clearly desperate to protect its AI assets, amid heightening international competition and heavy trade restrictions, particularly from the US who are battling to maintain position as the leader in AI and technology.
Republican Congressman Jim Jordan is leading an investigation into allegations that the Biden administration “coerced” big tech companies—like Google and OpenAI—to “censor lawful speech” in their AI models.
The investigation was triggered by concerns about the potential suppression of conservative voices and aims to uncover if there was any government influence over AI content moderation.
Jordan has sent letters to 16 tech companies (notably, Elon Musk's AI start-up, xAI, was not included, raising questions over the political agenda of the investigation), giving them until March 27th to respond.
