Our Report: OpenAI has decided to buff its AI safety team by creating a new "safety advisory group" that will make recommendations to the leadership, with the board retaining veto power.
🔑 Key Points:
The move aims to address potential harms from AI technology, following a leadership change and evolving discussions on AI risks—somewhat passively addressing project Q-star
They’ve now split the department into 3 independent teams:
The safety systems team that governs in-production models.
The preparedness team deals with frontier models
The superalignment team works on theoretical aspects.
Henceforth, multiple risk assessments will be carried out by all 3 teams including assessments in categories like cybersecurity, persuasion, model autonomy, and CBRN threats.
Lastly, more power has been awarded to the board, along with leadership, who now hold the decision to deploy or withhold AI models based on risk evaluations.
🤨 Why you should care: OpenAI's proactive stance on AI safety reflects a growing awareness of the potential risks associated with advanced AI technologies and their impact on society. Hopefully, this approach to AI safety might set a precedent for other AI companies to follow.

IBM is set to acquire StreamSets and WebMethods from Software AG for $2.3B, with the technology supporting IBM’s AI ambitions by integrating with its WatsonX AI and data platform.
Furthermore, this move aligns with IBM's strategy of embracing hybrid cloud environments and managing data across different clouds. Notably, the strength of an AI model in today’s time is usually determined by the size of the data set it’s trained on; thus we can expect future acquisitions and plays by AI companies to be centered around data acquisition.
We expect to see future acquisitions far north of $2.3B.
New York City Council member-elect Susan Zhuang admitted to using AI to help respond to a questionnaire from a local publication due to English not being her first language.
This admission followed the New York Post's investigation, revealing that Zhuang's responses, particularly to a question about what makes someone a New Yorker, seemed AI-generated. Somewhat worryingly, AI is becoming more commonplace in the drafting of political legislation; and the legislation behind using it in this scenario currently lags behind the proliferation of the AI tools themselves.
In preparation for the 2024 Olympics, Nice, France, is enhancing law enforcement by integrating AI with its extensive network of 4,200 cameras, using advanced features like facial recognition and movement algorithms to detect infractions and suspicious activities.
This approach reflects a broader trend where AI aids in identifying threats and maintaining public safety, yet it raises concerns about privacy and the implications of widespread surveillance technology.
Fully Orwellian or are we still a while off?
