Our Report: Meta now requires disclosures for AI-created or altered political advertisements, and has put the policy in place to create transparency and stop the flow of misinformation.
🔑 Key Points:
The new policy, effective from 2024, mandates advertisers to disclose the use of AI in altering or creating political ads on Facebook and Instagram, and advertisers must clarify if ads portray unreal actions by real people, fabricate non-existent individuals, or manipulate footage of actual events.
The updates follow Meta's decision to bar political advertisers from using generative AI ad tools (covered in yesterday’s newsletter), amidst expanding access to AI-powered advertising technologies (for individuals and businesses).
In October, Google also introduced generative AI ad tools, opting to exclude political content by blocking specific prompts in a move to protect public discourse from manipulation through the malignant use of their publicly available AI Tools
🤨 Why you should care: With digital platforms under scrutiny for content authenticity, these measures mark significant steps in ensuring the integrity of online political communication—although we imagine any campaign with a large enough budget will find a way to incorporate AI through loopholes.

Baidu (one of the biggest AI firms in China) has ordered 1,600 Huawei Ascend AI chips for its servers, signaling a shift away from NVIDIA due to intensified U.S. export restrictions (complete blockade on exports put in place by the Biden administration).
This move, worth about 450M yuan ($61M USD), represents a strategic pivot to domestic technology amidst challenges in accessing American chip technology. This comes after yesterday’s news that Germany and other European markets announced their localized, and independent of the US investment in AI.
Microsoft is addressing the AI chip shortage by updating its Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub with free access to Azure's AI infrastructure, specifically Nvidia-based GPU virtual machines, for select sta1rtups (in, what we assume to be, an attempt to catalyze the creation of new AI startups under the MS banner).
Y-combinator and its community of startups will be the first to gain access to the AI infrastructure as Microsoft looks to strengthen its relationship with early-stage startup accelerators.
YouTube is rolling out a generative AI tool for some U.S. Premium users, enabling conversations about videos through an "Ask" feature. The AI, powered by Google's Bard, can summarize videos, delve deeper into subjects, and handle various queries.
Additionally, YouTube is trialing an AI that categorizes comments by topics, simplifying the process of discovering and engaging with the most relevant discussions. Personally, I think the YouTube comment section couldn’t get any better, but we’ll find out whether that’s true or not soon enough…
