Our Report: Google has announced 3 major updates to chatbot Bard: It’s rebranding to ‘Gemini’, it will now also be accessible via a new app for Android, and a more complex version (Gemini Advanced) will be available under a new paid subscription.
🔑 Key Points:
Google has rebranded Bard to ‘Gemini’ to reflect the technology it’s built on, but it will still be available in all the same places and will still have all the same capabilities.
They’ve also launched an app to make ‘Gemini’ features easier to access for Android users (iPhone users can access ‘Gemini’ via the iOS Google app).
Finally, they’ve introduced ‘Gemini Advanced’—powered by Gemini Ultra 1.0 (their most powerful AI model)—that can complete complex tasks, like coding and logical reasoning.
‘Gemini Advanced’ is available for $20p/m under a “Google One AI Premium” subscription (which includes 2TB of storage and other perks), which users can use without paying for two months.
🤨 Why should you care: These updates are a move by Google to create an eco-system of AI-powered models to make it easier for users to access and collaborate with Google AI, which is no doubt set to challenge its biggest AI rivals, OpenAI.

The trend is clear: Innovators who built on OpenAI are hungry for alternatives as their LLM-powered apps catch fire with users. Why?
Inference costs on OpenAI are too high for new apps to become successful businesses, especially for the fine-tuned models.
Low latency and scale don’t come out of the box unless you can commit hundreds of thousands upfront to OpenAI. Not realistic for most folks.
Closed-sourced models lack flexibility needed to orchestrate the cocktail of checkpoints, embeddings, etc., that deliver excellent experiences.
OctoAI is the fastest, most affordable option to run Mixtral 8x7B, and the engineering effort to switch is negligible as the API formatting is the same as OpenAI. Customers making the move see comparable quality, 12x savings, and 30% lower latency when switching from GPT-4-Turbo.

Refeat is an AI-powered research tool
Following President Biden's executive order, which mandated AI guidelines and security measures, the U.S. government has created a new AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC).
The consortium has over 200 members, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and NVIDIA, academic stakeholders (from MIT and Stanford), and AI-centric research institutes.
They’ll be tasked with developing guidelines for capability evaluations, risk management, safety and security, and watermarking synthetic content.
This is a major step forward for the US government to ensure that AI developments don’t sacrifice national security, privacy and surveillance, elections, and job security.

P.S. That was the last edition for Work In AI GPT, but keep it handy as we’re releasing our new job board, ‘Work In AI’ on Monday, 12th February.
Following proposals last week, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced that all robocalls—made using voice-cloning technology—will be illegal, with immediate effect.
This will give the state power to prosecute the makers of unsolicited fake calls, that use AI-generated voices to mimic public figures for malicious intent.
The FCC is urging receivers of AI-powered robocalls to record the calls and report them to their local attorney general’s office, which is coordinating with the FCC on this initiative.
Google has established that Gemini (formerly Bard) stores all user conversations—and related data (language device, and location)—for three years, to improve its service.
Users can turn off ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ from the ‘My Activity’ dashboard to stop Gemini saving conversations, and prompts can be deleted from the ‘Gemini Apps Activity’ screen.
However, Google has warned users not to “enter confidential information or data” into Gemini chats, regardless, because conversations will still be saved for 72 hrs.
OpenAI has a similar policy, as ChatGPT saves chats for 30 days—regardless of whether ChatGPT’s conversation history is switched off—unless a user has a custom data policy.
Researchers have developed an audio-based AI system that uses ML algorithms to analyze cough and breath sounds to detect COVID-19, serving as a non-invasive diagnostic tool.
Recent studies to prove the effectiveness of this tool have shown promising results, however, they also established that it wasn’t as effective as traditional symptom-checker methods.
It highlighted challenges with unvalidated data, and delays between infection and audio recording, proving that AI models are only as good as the data they are trained on.
The emphasis is on researchers to learn from these limitations and refine their models to develop more accurate and effective tools for COVID-19 diagnosis.
Over the past year, AI Tool Report has worked with Hubspot, Brave Browser, SurfShark, Guidde, Graft & many more—presenting their AI products/services to over 490,000 AI enthusiasts, boasting:
