Our Report: Singapore is set to significantly expand its AI expertise, with plans to triple its AI talent to 15,000 professionals by upskilling engineers, scientists, and working professionals.
🔑 Key Points:
This expansion aligns with Singapore's position as a tech hub, home to the Asian headquarters of major companies like Alphabet and Microsoft. Additionally, they announced a $52.3M investment in Southeast Asia’s first LLM that caters to the languages of local regions.
Nvidia's revenue reports highlight Singapore's significant role in the tech industry, with substantial earnings originating from the region—$2.7B which trails only the US, China & Taiwan.
Government incentives for the AI sector will see a boost, including support for AI startups and the establishment of AI "centers of excellence." Furthermore, efforts to attract foreign talent will be complemented by intensified local AI training programs and the provision of GPUs for researchers.
🤨 Why you should care: Singapore's ambitious AI strategy demonstrates its commitment to becoming a leading player in the global AI landscape and highlights the growing significance of AI in nations across the world.

In 2023, AI's impact on technology was significant enough to influence the "word of the year" selections of major dictionaries like Oxford, Cambridge, and Merriam-Webster with the words “hallucinate”, “authentic”, and “prompt” all securing spaces in the list.
Notably, “prompt” secured the runner-up spot, second only to “rizz” (can thank TikTok for that). Whilst it’d be easy to dismiss this as gimmicky, it’s important to realize that AI-related terms seeping into our vernacular is a signal of it’s growing influence in our culture.
AstraZeneca (one of the COVID-19 vaccine producers) has partnered with American AI biologics firm Absci in a deal worth up to $247M, striking a collaboration focused entirely on designing an antibody for cancer treatment using Absci's innovative zero-shot generative AI model.
This model aims to develop new and improved antibody therapeutics, and Absci uses AI to “design optimal drug candidates based on target affinity, safety, manufacturability, and other traits”
This could be huge…
Mistral AI (the new French kid on the block) is nearing a $2B valuation following a major funding round of $487M, with significant investments from renowned tech firms like A16z, NVIDIA, and Salesforce Inc.
This development positions Mistral AI as a formidable player in the AI landscape and furthers the case for open-source AI models. Whilst many organizations (including OpenAI) have transitioned to a closed-source model, Mistral will continue to push the envelope on open-source development.
