After it closed the doors on its robotic division in 2020 (to focus on building Large Language Models, capable of achieving Artificial General Intelligence), OpenAI has reopened them again, revealing secret details about its plans to build and mass produce its own set of robots—complete with custom sensors—via several job listing posts.

According to the job listings, the newly formed robotic team will focus on developing “general-purpose,” “adaptive,” and “versatile” robots that can operate in real-world, dynamic environments, with human-like intelligence.

To achieve this, the team will develop sensors and computational elements, built on existing OpenAI models and technologies, blending hardware with software to create and mass produce (reportedly exceeding 1M units) highly capable (possibly humanoid) robots, potentially with limbs.

So far, OpenA’s recruitment drive focuses on just three positions: An Electronic Perception Engineer, who will develop the custom sensor systems, a Robotics Mechanical Design Engineer, who will design the core, mechanical systems for the robots, and a Technical Project Manager, who will oversee and coordinate the entire process.
