After facing mounting complaints over its recently released (October), but wildly inaccurate AI feature—that summarizes news and entertainment stories, using AI—Apple has made the decision to temporarily remove it, and make some much-needed changes.

Several news outlets, including UK-based, BBC News, have slammed the feature since it launched, claiming that it was "a danger to the public's right to reliable information on current affairs." As an example, the BBC complained that it had stated that Luigi Mangione—the man charged in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson—had shot himself when he hadn’t.

When the feature is re-released (believed to be next week), to make it more obvious that the summaries have been made with AI, all AI-powered summaries will be displayed in italics, so users can tell the difference between regular summaries and AI-generated ones. They will also contain a note, saying that the feature is in beta and “may contain errors,” and users will be able to disable the AI feature, directly from the Lock Screen.
